The Basics of the Internet of Things
By Anjali Dubey
What is the Internet of Things?
The Internet of Things (IoT) is a system of interrelated computing devices, mechanical and digital machines, objects, animals or people that are provided that hasunique identifiers and the ability to transfer data over a network without requiring human-to-human or human-to-computer interaction.
How does it work?
The Internet of things or IoT is an environment where different objects are accessible with the help of the internet. The built-in sensors have the ability to transfer data over a network and the technology embedded in the objects help to interact with the internal as well as external environment to perform the task accordingly.
The devices in the system are installed with sensors which pick up data from the connected devices and perform the task assigned to it by the user. The devices are connected to the cloud through cellular data, satellite, Wifi, bluetooth etc.So whenever you say something like “Alexa! What day is it?”, it picks up the command, and the system processes the data and returns the correct answer accordingly.
Applications of IoT
There are various fields where IoT finds its applications like wearables (smart watches, fitness bands, glasses etc), home applications (like Siri, Alexa, Google Home, security systems, smart lights etc.), in agriculture, retail stores, healthcare and many more.
The internet of things is one of the fastest growing and developing fields in tech. There is immense research and production work continuously going on in the field and it is going to be extremely exciting to see where IoT finds its applications in our daily life in the future and helps in contributing towards progress in the world of technology.
